What does it mean to grow up in a system that doesn't know how to love?
To age out of foster care means to never be adopted, never to experience the permanency and unconditional love that every human needs. It means reaching 18 and being told you're on your own.
With CORAL, this population is seen and supported. We become the village that embraces them, believes in them, and walks beside them.
The System's Blind Spot
The foster care system fails young people long before they turn 18. By age 9, a child's chances of being adopted drop significantly with each passing year. The system that's supposed to provide permanency and belonging instead sends a clear message: you're aging out, and we're moving on.
When youth do reach 18, support becomes a patchwork. Some programs provide extended assistance for youth pursuing education or employment, but access depends on where you live, whether you know the program exists, and whether you have someone advocating for you. Many youth don't. The support exists in theory but not in practice for those who need it most.
Funding is inconsistent. Awareness is low. Access barriers are real. A young person aging out of foster care might qualify for help, but they won't know about it. Or they'll age out of one program before they can access another. Or they'll live in a county where the program isn't fully implemented. The result is the same: they're on their own, expected to navigate adulthood without the family structure most of us take for granted.
What Happens When They Fall
Without stable housing and community support, the outcomes are stark:
1 in 3 will experience homelessness. They'll sleep in cars, on couches, in shelters invisible to a system that doesn't count their pain.
1 in 4 will become involved with the justice system. Survival often means choices the system criminalizes.
They're 4 times more likely to attempt suicide. The trauma of aging out alone, without family or support, takes a devastating toll.
Only 3 out of 100 will graduate college. Without stability, education becomes a luxury they can't afford.
